True to its title,
this book
is all about ways to keep a marriage strong.
Tricia Goyer divides her points up into individual chapters and
dives
right in. She pulls advice from her own marriage, many other books,
people she
has interviewed, and the bible. Bringing all of these variations
together into
one book gives the reader a lot of choices to fit their individual
style when
it comes to how they would like their marriage to go.
One of the things I
liked
most about this book was that it is okay to disagree with one point of
view;
you’ll have many to choose from. Tricia Goyer allows outside advice
from your
average, everyday married person to let the reader know what it is that
they do
to make their marriage better, or what it is that they are currently
struggling
with. It makes you feel as though you are not alone in the battle to
make a
marriage last.
Her target audience
is people
who were born in the 1970’s and 1980’s who are currently married. She
says that
these people tend to come from broken homes, so they take some of what
they
learned from their broken homes into their new marriages, which can
cause some
disruption. Although she has a specific audience, I believe that anyone
who is
married and has struggles (which is all of us, unless you are in a
state of
denial), would benefit from the many point of views of this book.
The only thing I
found myself
shaking my head about was some of the more Christian things she talked
about.
Again, even though sometimes very much disagreed with what she was
saying, I
still was able to get through the book because a lot of times the very
next
page was a piece of advice that I did agree with and did want to try.
Another
strong point to her book is that she puts herself in a very likeable
position
to all of her readers. She appears very down to earth, and is not
afraid to
become vulnerable with the rest of us and tell us about her struggles
with her
husband John, the mistakes she has made, and how she has been able to
rectify
them.
This was a very
helpful book
to read and is something I will probably keep off of my bookshelf and
onto my
bedside table because I will be referring to it again and again!
