Twist Phelan's hook to her Pinnale Peak Mystery series is that each one
is based on a different physical, adventure sport. Her newest, False
Fortune, uses kayaking as its come on. Ms Phelan is an avid outdoors
woman and it shows in her work.
Hannah is tossed into the case of a mysterious Uranium mine on an
Indian reservation. She falls into it when covering for her family
memebers at a trial. What should have been a simple settlement becomes
a race for her life. And no one wants her on the case, no one except
the women who live near the mine and their sickly children. She can not
turn her back on the consequences of the goverment and Indian's actions
on these families. Her life is furher complicated by a long lost sister
that appears, a sister she does not want to explain to her other
sister, her fellow lawyer Shelby. A stranger's almost drowning, a
treasure map and her kayak all converge to a flight by water ending.
It might be very helpful to read this series in order. The background
of the characters seems to have been develped over time in the other
books. While there are continual references, explanations and allusions
to the past, better understanding of the characters' motivations
might have added to the reader's enjoyment.
