Larry
Cresswell is a twenty-something guy
who moves back in with his parents after finishing school.
When Larry gets his girlfriend Poly pregnant
life becomes hard and a lot of things have to change. Larry becomes the
devout
father to his daughter. He loves Una and
takes care of her when Poly is sleeping.
Which is better for all of them because Poly can sometimes be
moody and
wild.
Both Larry and
Polly’s lives become
complicated when they find out that she is a Changeling.
When Poly learns the true details about
herself she leaves for Seattle and takes Una with her. Poly
takes their daughter to the WTO Protests of 1999. This is a disaster
that has
already been predicted. It is an event
that will break open a hole between dimensions and send Poly home as
Queen of
the Sluagh goblin-folk.
Larry can do nothing but go after his
daughter. Although getting her back is not as easy at it seems. Larry must first come to terms with his own
true origins if he wants his to save himself and his daughter.
This is first instalment in the Arkadia
trilogy and it is a very promising debut. Slightly
confusing at first it takes some time to get used to
the
writing style and situations that the reader is suddenly dropped into. With a lot of detail and description there is
sometimes not enough storyline to keep a hold of.
With the catch line ‘Not all faeries have
wings. Not all goblins are green. And not all wars are fought on the
outside’ this
book looks like a must read for any fantasy genre lovers.
However in reality this book lacks enough
fantasy content to keep a hard core reader of this theme interested. Only in the last third of the book did that
oomph that had been dangled around as bait appear.
A great graphic and slightly violent start
to this series but with all the small weaknesses aside this is a nice
intense
read that does manage to hit the spot. I
am looking forward the rest of the series and what it will bring.
